C’era una valle fitta di pini e di aguzzi cipressi, chiamata Gargafia, sacra a Diana dalle vesti succinte;
nel più remoto luogo, tra i boschi, c’era una grotta non fatta dall’uomo: la natura, col suo talento, aveva riprodotto la perfezione dell’arte; infatti, con viva pomice e tufo leggero aveva creato un arco spontaneo;
risuona a destra una fonte, che l’onda gentile rende lucente, cinta nell’ampia foce da bordi coperti d’erba.
Qui la dea dei boschi era solita, affaticata dalla caccia, bagnare nell’acqua le giovani membra.

There was a valley there called Gargafia,
dense with pine trees and sharp cypresses, sacred to Diana of the high-girded tunic, where, in the depths, there is a wooded cave, not fashioned by art. But ingenious nature had imitated art. She had made a natural arch out of native pumice and porous tufa. On the right, a spring of bright clear water murmured into a widening pool, enclosed by grassy banks. Here the woodland goddess, weary from the chase,
would bathe her virgin limbs in the crystal
liquid.
